What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate that authenticates a document — confirming the signature and seal on it are genuine — so a foreign government will accept it without further legalization. It's required whenever a document issued in the U.S. needs to be used in another country that's part of the Hague Apostille Convention: things like a birth certificate for a citizenship filing, a diploma for a foreign licensing board, or a power of attorney for an overseas property sale.
